Dry brushing 101 and it’s benefits

Taking care of our skin is crucial for our health! We must be mindful of what comes into contact with our skin because it’s our protective barrier for external toxins

When it comes to skincare products, the market is never-ending. It can be an overwhelming decision to choose how to take care of our skin. A popular technique that has proven highly beneficial is dry brushing. This is one skincare tool you’ll want to read more about and look into purchasing!

Basics of dry brushing

Dry brushing is a great way to exfoliate the skin. The brush often has soft and dry bristles to help lift the dead skin from your body to be gently washed away in the shower afterward. As the name implies, you are using a brush on the skin while dry. A great way to incorporate this into your routine is to dry brush right before getting in the shower. If you use your morning shower to wake up, this is a great way to start the day off invigorated!

It is important to use a high-quality product that is made from natural ingredients to feel good about. Change Market has a 2-in-1 brush that offers one side as a dry brush and the other as pumice to exfoliate dry feet. The bristles from this brush are made of Polypropylene, which means they resist stains, odours, bacteria, fungi and will last a long time. Let’s get right into how to use this brush!

4 steps for dry brushing

1) Buy a brush

The first step is buying a good quality brush. You’ll want a brush with natural, firm bristles like the one mentioned above. Make sure to replace your dry brush every 6-12 months or as needed and take care by keeping it in a dry place to store. Check out my fave here.

2) How and when to dry brush

The best time to dry brush is before the shower. No water is needed since the bristles’ dryness helps lift  the dead skin cells more efficiently. If you have sensitive skin, do not put too much pressure when brushing so that the skin doesn’t break.  Dry brushing can be done every day, up to twice a day. You’ll notice the difference in your skin!

Start from the bottom of your body (your feet) and move your way up to the top. Brush in a circular motion with long strokes going down and up. Brush each area, moving towards the heart.

3) Shower time

The whole process can take 5-10 minutes. Once you have completed the dry brushing process, enjoy a nice relaxing shower afterward. This step is important for washing away the dead skin cells. You will be left feeling clean and refreshed!

4) Moisturize

To add to the benefits of dry brushing it is recommended to apply a good moisturizer after cleansing the body. Moisturizing helps to keep the skin looking clear, smooth and youthful. It is crucial for all skin types to moisturize but most important for those with dry skin. Meeku Extreme Cucumber Cream is a great moisturizer, especially if you have dry, cracking skin.

Benefits of dry brushing

Flushes out toxins

A great way to detox the skin and flush out toxins is through dry brushing. How is this possible? One of our primary systems involved in detoxing is the lymphatic system. When this system becomes sluggish from toxins, our bodies cannot run optimally. Unlike the circulatory system, where blood is required to pump through and ensure things run smoothly, the lymphatic system relies on muscle stimulation. Dry brushing helps with this by stimulating the muscles to remove the toxins within the lymphatic system.

Exfoliates skin

As mentioned, dry brushing removes dead skin cells because the process is exfoliating to our skin. By clearing away these dead skin cells, we create smoother and firmer skin. Good skin is not only beneficial for our health but makes us feel good too!

Increases blood circulation

A significant benefit of dry brushing is its ability to increase blood circulation. If you notice slight redness on your skin, this is mild irritation, which signals blood circulation. Be gentle with the brushing because although mild irritation is good, we do not want to break the skin and risk infection. This process helps remove excess fluid and aids in stimulating the circulatory system to carry out waste through our pores and sweat glands.

Plumps skin

After a dry brushing session, you’ll see that your skin feels tighter and plumper; improving the appearance of the skin; you will see it looks smoother. In order to truly reap the benefits of dry brushing, you should make it a part of your regular routine!

Helps with lymphatic drainage

What is lymphatic drainage? Our body uses lymph nodes to clear our systems by relying on muscle movement to carry toxins that are drained and eliminated from the body. The benefits of lymphatic drainage are that it reduces swelling and inflammation, improves our immune system with the removal of toxins, promotes relaxation, and energizes the body—a crucial process for a healthy system that runs smoothly and is less susceptible to illness.

How to create your own little ritual

It is highly recommended to shower after using your dry brush to wash the dead skin away. Why not turn this time into a bit of spa pampering at home! There are many great products to add to your shower to truly reap all the benefits from dry brushing.

To wash the skin, check out handmade soap by Somi. There are various scents to choose from, and you can find all of them on the Change Market website. (Check out the website for more scents! – delete, just said it’s available on  Depending on your mood, you can try Lavender and Chamomile for deep relaxation and preparation for bed or try Coffee and Orange for your morning shower to invigorate and energize for the day ahead!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      One of the final steps of dry brushing is moisturizing. This step will help make your skin soft and reduce skin problems since keeping the skin moisturized helps prevent too much dryness and oiliness. Great products to check out are Bare Skin Bar Repairing Butter Balm, the Meeku cream mentioned above and Nutiva Coconut Oil– Pure in a variety of scents, including unscented. Your skin will thank you!

A favourite part of going to the spa for me is facials! If you are looking to complete this experience with a facial, Change Market has amazing face products that nourish your skin and leave you glowing. Wash your face with Hello Sunday Face + Body Sea Salt Soap Bar and finish off with Bare Skin Facial masks, available in two skin types, one for oily and acne-prone skin, the other for dry and sensitive skin.
